Outdoor cinema returns to the city

the death of stalin

Here to make the warm nights in the city more fun, a series of outdoor summer cinema evenings return! Film screenings under the night sky are back at two venues, one in Nicosia and one in Larnaca, this May and June.

Coffee shop and bookstore To Erma, in collaboration with the Ermageddon cinema society, has already begun its screenings in Nicosia. Next up on Monday 31 the 2017 dark comedy The Death of Stalin. The film is set in 1953 Moscow and follows the events after the death of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin who falls ill and quickly dies after being in power for nearly 30 years. Suddenly, the members of the Council of Ministers scramble for power. The film received 18 awards including a Scotland BAFTA and was nominated 40 times.

Places are limited in Erma’s small and charming garden and seats are already fully booked for May 31’s screening yet many more films will follow. Ermageddon cinema society is busy planning June’s programme and it will soon be announced on Erma’s Facebook page.

Larnaca will host its own cinema evenings this June, with each Wednesday night at the Pierides museum dedicated to films from around the world. Starting on June 2, the first film to be screening at the museum’s garden is 2020’s The Man Who Sold His Skin, a drama film about a Syrian refugee in Lebanon who allows his back to become the canvas for a famous tattoo artist. Soon, collectors become interested in this work of art. It was nominated for an Academy Award this year under the Best International Feature Film category.

On June 9 the film Nuestras Madres will be screened, then on June 16 Roubaix, une Lumière, with Sin Señas Particulares on June 23 and Little Joe on June 30. The first film of July will be a collaboration with the International Short Film Festival Cyprus presenting a special screening with a selection of local and international award-winning films of the 2020 Festival. The free screenings will continue every Wednesday until September 15. The full programme is available on the Facebook page of Larnaca Cinema Society.
