Regional activists tell their Stories of Resistance

Real-life stories from the Eastern Mediterranean region will be presented in an event at Ledra Palace tonight highlighting communities that are under threat and climate change issues.

Titled ‘Stories of Resistance with Activists from the Eastern Mediterranean Region’, the event will welcome activists and individuals from these communities to share their experiences and actions. Besides several initiatives that are active in Cyprus, numerous groups from the region will take part in the event on Monday.

Apart from the local organisers, Avli and Cyprus Natural Coastline, speakers will also include individuals from Fridays for Future Thessaloniki, Gastivists Collective, Gastivists Italia, Gastivists Greece, Kazdağı Doğal ve Kültürel Varlıkları Koruma Derneği, Yesil Baris, YEU and Stop the Wall.

An interactive discussion will take place with leading researchers, organisers, and activists, about the effects of the climate crisis in their communities and land, and how natural resources are being used for violation of human rights and division of communities.

“Important part of the discussion,” say the organisers, “is identifying a common resistance target of environmental injustice intercommunally and regionally. We believe there are many examples such as fossil gas, militarisation, climate and social justice, apartheid, ethnic cleansing and peacebuilding in the East Mediterranean region.”

The event will start with sharing stories and experiences and with a discussion between the speakers, shortly after a Q&A with the audience will follow. The conversation will be in English but with the opportunity to ask questions in Greek and Turkish to make the event more inclusive.
