Larnaca drug squad intercepts over 20kg of cannabis

A sting operation led to the arrest of two men, aged 46 and 47, for possession of 22 kilograms of cannabis, police said on Thursday.

According to police statement, the drug squad and customs authorities cooperated to intercepted three parcels, containing more than 22 kg of cannabis, which had been sent to the office of a courier company in Larnaca.

A day earlier, the 47-year-old suspect presented himself at around 10:50 am at the courier’s pick-up location. The man received two parcels found to contain 14.48 kg of dried cannabis in 12 nylon packages.

Police arrested the man for evident offences and in a subsequent search of his Larnaca residence officers found a sum of money and a mobile phone, which were confiscated as evidence. The 47-year-old was then re-arrested and taken into custody.

Around 3:30pm in of the same day, a 46-year-old man arrived at the courier office to collect the remaining third package. Upon receipt of the package, he was stopped by police who determined the package contained 8.359 kg of cannabis in eight nylon packages .

The 46-year-old suspect was likewise arrested and taken into custody.

Both were remanded for eight days at Larnaca district court.
