Nikos Christodoulides’ first 100 days in power presentation on Tuesday drew a mixed reaction from parliamentary parties with opposition Akel saying major changes are needed, and Dipa saying it is a good start so far.

At a press conference earlier in the day the president offered both an overview of what the government has done but also a roadmap for the direction ahead.

But Akel insisted that major changes are needed to address the issues at hand rather than amendments to the previous ten years of government.

The major social problems of the Cypriot people – wages, cost of living, housing – are becoming more acute and require solutions with a radically different policy, not new announcements. We have seen this work over the past ten years,” the opposition party said.

It noted, however, that it supports the new government where it views positive changes have been made – namely the overhaul of the previous school exam system.

For its part, Dipa – which supported Christodoulides’ candidacy – said that his first 100 days have shown the government as correctly prioritising the issues which society requested.

“Despite some mistakes, which sent the wrong signals and caused confusion, the government reacted well, correcting them and showing willingness to institutionalise transparent procedures,” Dipa said.
