DIY pet furniture: how to build your kitty a cat tree

Every pet deserves a loving and respectful home: please only consider acquiring a pet if you will be able to take care of its long-term needs. Also, consider choosing your animal companion from a shelter, where there are so many wonderful furry friends who need a forever home.

For those handy with tools and who are fans of DIY, this video demonstrates the step-by-step sequence to making a simple, effective cat tree for your favourite feline, using materials found in any hardware store.

Why the need for cat trees? They actually offer felines several benefits.

This is because your indoor cat has the same instincts as those that live outdoors. The latter climb trees to observe what’s going on around them from a safe place. They may also use a tree to target prey or get away from predators.

By climbing high up onto her cat tree, your kitty gets to exercise, then perch and check out her surroundings. She also gets somewhere away from other cats in the house if she wants her own space – vertical territory of her own definitely adds to her sense of security. Meanwhile, if your cat tree has scratching posts built in, your kitty can scratch away and no longer feel the need to go after your furniture… a win-win for both of you!
