Odes to pain and pleasure

Do you even remember the last time you went to the theatre or an exhibition? It has probably been a while as cultural institutions have been shut for most of the past year. While museums are set to open on Monday, the local art scene as we know and love it isn’t returninig just yet. Thankfully we still have online performances including one more on Sunday.

Artist Lia Haraki and the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre are presenting a performance by Yakinthi Lagiou. Titled Odes to Pain and Pleasure, the performance includes various music improvisations by Yakinthi with the participation of Angelos Ioakeimoglou. Using music in her work is ordinary for Yakinthi as she studied classical studies in piano and music theory as well as Contemporary Music and Performance Art. She often combines natural and electronic sounds in performances and believes in innovative music that carries a personal aesthetic. And that’s exactly what Sunday’s event will include.

“Combining natural and electronic sounds,” she says, “I attempt to express the stimuli of mind and soul in live passages. The puzzles of life lead to harmonies as well as the turmoil of pain and pleasure, with some moments of calmness… with a feeling and a conclusion about the art of living and not just life. Chaos remains poetic while questions at the centre of the soul will always be divided.”
