The teen who created her own indoor farm

Hey kids, today, instead of a crafts project, we’ve got an inspiring story about one teen from Singapore who taught herself to become an urban farmer, and is now teaching other kids to do likewise.

After doing research for years on her own, in 2018, 17-year-old Hannah Joe built her own aquaponic system – a form of indoor farming that rears fish and grows vegetables, sustainably.

The idea in a closed-loop aquaponic system is to use the nutrient-rich waste of fish in tanks, to provide natural fertiliser for veggie-growing plants, which in turn purify the water (by absorbing the waste) for the fish to stay healthy… and the process just keep going.

This means there’s no soil involved, no artificial fertilisers or worries about pests, and… you can grow a lot of food that way, right at home, without even a garden!

Pretty ingenious, right?
