Defying Nazi ideology: Oskar Schlemmer’s ‘Bauhaus Stairway’

Created in tribute to the Bauhaus school in 1932, artist Oskar Schlemmer’s ‘Bauhaus Stairway’ was denounced by the Nazi regime, and eventually brought to America by Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) founding director, Alfred H. Barr.

In this video, Christina Eliopoulos, MoMA Archives fellow for research and reference, tells the story of Schlemmer’s subversive painting and its journey to a more receptive audience.
