Bicommunal photo show provides hope for a ‘peaceful future’

Main opposition Akel on Saturday inaugurated a bicommunal photo exhibition in Dherynia with a central theme of the present division of the island juxtaposed with the chance of future unity.

Akel parliamentary spokesman Giorgos Loukaides said it was a special bicommunal photo exhibition because it gave people the opportunity to see the Cyprus issue through images captured by Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and other photographers on “the barbed wire that divides us the common future that unites us”.

“Images that show both the tragic aspect of the unacceptable status quo of partition but at the same time they send us messages of hope for a peaceful future of the liberation and reunification of Cyprus and our people,” Loukaides said.

He also said the road to this Cyprus is already paved and only needs the necessary political will from all sides to achieve it because the framework of a federal solution has been decided by the two communities since 1977. Loukaides said this solution can be reached provided that both leaders respect what has been achieved in the talks so far.

The exhibition will be at the Garage bicommunal centre in Dherynia until April 23 and will then move to Nicosia, at the Pallouriotissa Old Market space between April 24 and 29.

The exhibition is jointly organised in cooperation with the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) group.
