Fan Ho: the great master of light and shadow

In this video we encounter the work of renown Chinese photographer, director and actor, Fan Ho.

Born in Shanghai in 1931, but moving to Hong Kong early in his life, he began to photograph the drama of urban life around him as a self-taught photographer in his teens, capturing, with his faithful Rolleiflex K4A, street scenes ranging from teeming markets to desolate alleyways.

Thanks to his creative brilliance, Ho built up a massive body of work documenting Hong Kong in the Fifties and Sixties as it was evolving into a major metropolitan centre, going on to win many prizes.

He also enjoyed a career as director and actor, but returned to photography upon leaving cinema and after having relocated to California with his family.

Ho died in San Jose in 2016, leaving behind an oeuvre that still inspires photographers today.
