Teen community-building and leadership skills… through gaming

In this video, we meet 16-year-old Devin ‘Duster’ Williams, a professional gamer who gives us new insights into what playing Fortnite for years has offered him.

Despite the negative press and fears around gaming hindering social and soft skills development, Devin credits his often 12-hour stints of play to helping him build community and grow his capacity for leadership – supporting newcomers and shutting down bullies.

That said, Devin’s previously physically active life – he was a gifted skater, who trained hard daily – has had to adjust to his gaming hours, and his mother shares the ongoing need to support him in maintaining needful exercise and getting outside for fresh air and sunshine.
