Effective ways parents can nurture accountability in kids

Mums and dads, this video is for you. Here, psychologist and life coach Dr. Paul Jenkins and speech and language pathologist Vicki Jenkins discuss how parents can foster accountability in kids effectively.

The process starts by parents correctly modelling accountability themselves for their children, viewing it through the framework of ownership and not blame, creating a culture of making it okay to fail at something and to try again, and discussing the subject openly with their children.

The duo also discuss a practical process for parents to cultivate accountability in kids:

  • Give a child a task they can handle
  • Hope they fall short (detach from the result)
  • Give them a similar task
  • Hope they succeed (detach from the result)

No matter the result, parents should allow and support the kid in experiencing the result of their efforts, and move on. This helps children see it is safe to take responsibility at aiming for a task or goal, and that it is worth trying again if they don’t get it right the first time.
