A large fire near Pentalia village in Paphos was put under control the fire service said on Thursday after burning 10 hectares of wild vegetation and many trees.

According to fire service spokesman, Andreas Kettis, the fire service was alerted at around 10.40am about the blaze near the village.

Initially three engines were sent but later two more were dispatched as well as two aircraft of the forestry department.

Kettis said that the fire was located near the village of old Pentalia and that some residences had to be evacuated. Five elderly residents whose houses were close to the blaze were taken to a safe place until the fire was put under control. No injuries were reported.

The blaze was put under control at around 2pm. The firemen’s task was a difficult one due to the strong winds, Kettis said.

Around 10 hectares of wild vegetation and many olive and almond trees were burned as well as vineyards.

Crews remained in the area until the blaze is completely extinguished, and to prevent flareups.
