Glutathione: the ‘mother’ of all antioxidants

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

In this video, Dr. Mark Hyman teaches us about the importance and best sources of glutathione.

Glutathione, also known as GSH, is a molecule found naturally in the body. Produced by the liver as well as by neurons in the central nervous system, glutathione is made up of three amino acids: L-cysteine, glycine, and L-glutamate.

More importantly, glutathione is an antioxidant involved in

  • metabolism of toxins and carcinogens,
  • DNA synthesis and repair,
  • protein and prostaglandin synthesis,
  • amino acid transport,
  • immune system function,
  • prevention of oxidative cell damage
  • enzyme activation

Deficiency of Glutathione contributes to oxidative stress, which in turn influences the development of several diseases, including: Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, cancer, heart attack, stroke and diabetes.
