The forestry department said the risk of forest fires remained at the highest level on Monday, urging the public to be extra careful.

The department stressed that lighting fires without permission was an offence punishable with up to 10 years in jail or a €50,000 fine or both.

Lighting a fire for the preparation of food is only permitted at designated locations in picnic areas.

The department said the use of power or farming tools that emit head, sparks, or flame should be avoided.

Cyprus is still reeling from a huge blaze last Saturday week, which claimed the lives of four people and destroyed homes and other property, and forest in an area of 55 square kilometres.

For emergencies the public can contact 1407 or 112.
