Yellow weather warning issued for Wednesday

The met office has issued a yellow warning for extreme temperatures on Wednesday, when a high of 41C is expected.

An announcement on Tuesday said that between 1pm and 5pm, the maximum temperature inland will reach 41 degrees Celsius and around 33C in the higher mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, after more fires broke out in Paphos on Tuesday, the forestry department said it will remain on red alert for wildfires on Wednesday.

The department called on the public to be particularly careful on trips to the countryside and avoid any activities that could pose a fire risk, such as using tools and agricultural machinery that produce heat, sparks or flames, such as sanding and welding equipment.

The announcement also said that lighting a fire without a permit is prohibited, reminding that it is considered an offence punishable by up to 10 years in prison and/or a €50,000 fine.

Lighting a fire for the purpose of cooking food is only allowed in designated picnic area barbecue spots, it added.

In case they see a fire, members of the public should immediately contact the forestry department on 1407 or the fire service on 112.
