Residents of mountainous areas are eligible for double subsidy in the state support schemes for renewable energy and energy conservation, the energy ministry announced on Tuesday, while calling on people to participate in the coming information days about the schemes.

The support schemes are announced every year with a budget of approximately €7m and concern thermal insulation of roofs, installation of photovoltaics and installation or replacement of solar water heating system in homes.

Through the schemes, residents are given the opportunity to reduce energy consumption and consequently save money on utility bills and reduce their carbon footprint.

This year’s support schemes have a total budget of €7.7m and are expected to cover 5,500 applications.

People who are interested in applying can receive information about the schemes during the information days organised in October by the energy ministry and the management committee of the renewable energy sources and energy conservation fund.

The information days will take place on Monday between 6 and 7.30pm at the Galata cultural centre, and at the same time on Wednesday at the Ayios Ambrosios cultural centre, as well as on October 11 at the Palechori primary school from 6 to 7.30pm.

Residents of nearby communities are urged to participate at the information events and to take advantage of the possibility to upgrade the energy consumption of their homes.

The announcement added that residents of mountainous communities are allowed a double subsidy.

Participants will also get the chance to receive information about the grant plan to boots new business activity, but also other plants that will be announced soon.

The Renewable Energy Sources and Energy Conservation Fund (the Fund) is the main financial tool of the Republic of Cyprus to promote Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and Energy Conservation (EC), with a view to achieving the binding national targets, as defined by the legislation and the relevant European Directives.
