Assault suspect committed to mental hospital

A 39-year-old man, suspected of assaulting his 75-year-old landlord has been admitted to Athalassa psychiatric hospital following a doctor’s order.

The suspect was expected to appear in court on Thursday but a psychiatrist who examined him decided he needed treatment and he was transferred to Athalassa mental hospital in Nicosia.

The man was arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of attempted murder, after he allegedly assaulted two older men, aged 72 and 75, shortly before 8am the same day in Limassol.

According to police, the 75-year-old man was at his workplace with his 72-year-old business partner when the suspect entered the premises and asked for him, and then allegedly started hitting him in the face.

The victim fell to the ground, and the suspect started kicking him.

The culprit also hit the 72-year-old who attempted to stop the man.

The suspect then left driving a twin-cab truck, while the two men were taken Limassol general hospital. The reason for the assault was not immediately known.

Due to his critical condition, the 75-year-old was later transferred to Nicosia general hospital.

The 72-year-old received first aid and was discharged.
