A 43-year-old man arrested in Greece on a European arrest warrant issued for cheque fraud by authorities in the Republic has been brought back to Cyprus to be remanded, police said on Friday.

Officers of the Nicosia CID went to Greece to accompany the suspect on the flight to the island which arrived on Thursday afternoon. The transfer was made after a Greek court decided to extradite the suspect to authorities in Cyprus.

He is wanted here for a cheque fraud case, forgery and obtaining goods under false pretences.

Media reports said the man is a Cypriot former footballer who appears to have stolen cheques worth more than €200,000 from a Nicosia-based business and his ex-partner in 2009.
