Ukraine withdrawing members of Unficyp

Comment Koumoullis At Some Point Unficyp Will Withdraw

Unficyp on Saturday said that five Ukrainian members of the UN peacekeeping force are due to be repatriated as the war in their homeland continues.

Spokesperson for the UN Secretary General Stephane Dujarric said during the UNSG’s daily press briefing on Thursday that Ukraine has requested the UN withdraw all its Ukrainian personnel stationed in Mali, Cyprus, Abyei, South Sudan and Kosovo.

“This includes 250 troops, 36 staff officers and experts on mission, 22 police officers. That’s for a total of 308 personnel from Ukraine that they’ve asked to withdraw,” he said, adding that “the process of actioning their request is under way”.

Unficyp spokesperson Aleem Siddique told the Cyprus News Agency that five members of the Unficyp personnel are from Ukraine, one of them a soldier and the rest police officers.

He added that UN headquarters are working on replacing them as soon as possible in collaboration with other peacekeeping forces.

He said that Unficyp operations will continue uninterrupted.
