Police on Wednesday were called in to free drivers who became stranded in snowed-up mountain roads as a cold snap continues.

Traffic police from the Morphou area and the Kakopetria police station helped 20 drivers stuck in snow in the mountainous area of Morphou. And another 70 drivers needed help after running into difficulties in sections of the road where snow had piled up on the surface with police escorting them to safety in patrol cars.

Officers from the Troodos and Platres police station brought to safety three drivers who were trapped after their cars became immobilised in the higher Troodos peaks.

Because of snow and wintery conditions, especially in the higher Troodos peaks, some roads are closed to all vehicles and others open only to four-wheel drive cars or those equipped with snow chains.

Earlier on Wednesday, police said the Platres-Troodos, Karvounas-Troodos, Prodromos-Troodos and Amiandos-Karvounas roads were closed to all vehicles because of snow.

They added that because of snow and ice a number of other mountain roads are open only to four-wheel cars and those equipped with snow chains.

The affected roads are Pedoulas-Prodromos, Pedoulas-Pinewood-Kakopetria, Prodromos-Lemythou, Kakopetria-Karvouna, Kyperounta-Agros, Agros-Palechori and Chandria -Lagoudera.

Police added that because of ice, roads in the wider road network in the higher mountains are slippery.

Roads conditions are changeable, and drivers are urged to check for updates before setting off. Information is available on the police website www.cypruspolicenews.com, on police social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook as well as on the police app.
