A woman in Limassol has filed a complaint with police that she was the victim of an alleged online scam after €27,129 was stolen from her bank account.

The woman told the police that she gave out her personal bank details in an SMS after she received a message from what she believed was Bank of Cyprus.

The message urged her to provide her personal details after the bank reportedly detected unusual activity on her account.

As it turned out, the message was a scam and the information she provided was used to empty her account.

She immediately reported the incident to the police, who are now investigating the online scam.

Police issued a warning last week that banks never ask for the personal details of their customers either by text, email or phone call and that such scams were on the increase.
