Labour ministry cracks down on undeclared work

The ministry of labour

The ministry of labour has announced it will be carrying out nationwide targeted inspections at hospitality venues and cafes during the month of May, in order to combat undeclared work and improve compliance with labour laws.

The purpose of the campaign, says the ministry, is to improve awareness of the consequences undeclared work and non-compliance with relevant legislation. Checks will be made regarding observance of basic employment conditions, such as, salary, working hours, and weekly time-off.

The ministry reminds workers and employers that persons working undeclared to the social security fund, face an administrative fine of €500 multiplied up to seven months, unless the employer proves that the period of violation was shorter. If it turns out that the breach period was longer, the fine is multiplied by the actual months.

The ministry also announced that anyone can file an anonymous or other complaint about undeclared work or violation of terms of employment at the designated phone line 77778577.
