The earlier work of Ioannis Kissonerghis at AG Leventis Gallery

In celebration of International Museum Day and honouring the work of a great Cypriot painter, a temporary exhibition will open at the AG Leventis Gallery. Depicting Female Sensuality features work by Ioannis Kissonerghis, earlier pieces than those included in the exhibition at the Leventis Municipal Museum of Nicosia, yet just as important. Opening on Wednesday and lasting all summer long, this exhibition arrives after being successfully run as the gallery’s first digital showcase back in 2020. Now the same pieces take the gallery’s halls in a real-life exhibition.

Kissonerghis’ earlier work, which is less known to the general public, draws its themes mainly from mythology or the Bible and more broadly on works in which the female nude is the protagonist. The majority of these pieces were created in the spirit of academic art, close to mostly French artists of the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, or artists from other countries who either studied in France or followed the style of academic art. Kissonerghis is the only artist whose work is linked to academic art.

Running until September 18, this exhibition has special significance as it follows an agreement between the AG Leventis Gallery and Kissonerghis’ grandchildren, and the long-term loan of their collection to the gallery. To celebrate the event, a free guided tour of the exhibition will be held on its opening day at 12pm, led by the curator Dr Elena Nikita.
