Coronavirus: Six deaths recorded from Covid in the last week

Six deaths from Covid and 2,103 new cases were seen in the week up to May 19, the ministry of health announced on Friday.

The deaths bring to 1,057 the number of people who have died since the start of the pandemic.

The 2,103 new coronavirus cases were recorded from 123,569 tests carried out from May 13 to Thursday, a positivity rate of 1.7 per cent.

The announcement was the weekly briefing by the health ministry on the new coronavirus cases and fatalities recorded in Cyprus.

The six people who died were three men and three women aged between 65 and 94.

Meanwhile, 42 coronavirus patients are being treated in state hospitals, of whom nine are in serious condition, including four who are intubated.

Furthermore, another 11 patients who are no longer infectious continue to be intubated due to Covid-19.

The ministry’s data showed the new cases were detected from 8,861 PCR and 114,708 rapid tests.

Of them, 141 PCR tests were carried out for contact tracing purposes during which seven positives were found.

Most tests, 78,210, were carried out by private initiative from which 1,751 of the new cases were found.

Through the ministry of health testing units 41,317 tests were carried out which found 267 positives.

Moreover, eight cases were detected in schools, 44 in care homes and only one among members of the National Guard.
