Waters off 17 beaches in north infected with E. coli and other bacteria

Kyrenia

Infections at various beaches in the north have been observed at the beginning of this summer season, according to Turkish Cypriot press reports.

According to reports from the north, the results of analyses carried out by the ‘ministry of health’ at 38 different beach areas in the north, in Famagusta and Kyrenia, confirmed the presence of infectious bacteria Enterecoccus and E. coli in the water at 17 of the areas tested.

The analyses were carried out in April, in order to determine whether specific coastal areas in north meet the criteria set by the EU for water quality.

The report stated that the infection and pollution of the sea was mainly due to sewage being discharged into the water.

Infections were also detected in various places in the port area of Kyrenia, but also at beaches in Lapithos, Karava, Limniti and Potamos tou Kampos.
