Boy seriously injured in crash

An 11-year-old boy is to undergo surgery after sustaining severe head injuries after being launched from the car after it struck a tree in Liopetri.

The young boy was first taken to Famagusta general hospital but was soon intubated and transferred to Nicosia general hospital for surgery as his condition is critical. 

He is to then be taken to Makarios hospital in the capital for recovery after the surgery, reports said. 

The 57-year-old driver of the vehicle, the boy’s grandmother, is not seriously harmed. 

The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when the driver appears to have lost control of the car and struck a tree, later overturning and striking a wall. The young boy was found on the pavement.  

Photos published in local media showed a seriously damaged SUV with a crumpled bonnet and bumper, along with a severely damaged windshield. The crash happened in a residential neighbourhood.
