The Limassol municipality has expressed its deepest regrets after a deer housed at the municipal zoo was found dead on December 9.

In a statement, the municipality said that an autopsy will be carried by the veterinary services in order to ascertain the precise cause of death.

The statement added that preliminary findings point to the death being an accident, as it appears that the deer’s antlers became trapped in the fencing of its enclosure, despite it meeting all regulatory standards and specifications.

The municipality’s statement also noted that animal welfare is a priority and that it is “it is in the process of studying and evaluating the zoo and is preparing to enter into a dialogue with residents about its future”.
