Restraining order for man who attempted to kill wife

A 63-year-old man accused of attempting to murder his wife in October was on Tuesday released on strict conditions ahead of his scheduled trial in February.

Paphos criminal court said the accused could face a long sentence in jail but granted a €50,000 bail provided he obtain two credit worthy signatories.

The accused has pled not guilty to all five charges, which were not immediately specified.

A restraining order against him means he is not allowed within 300m of his wife, must present himself to the Peyia police station three times a week, is on the stop-list and cannot cross to the north.

His bail was granted despite arguments made by the prosecution that the accused may not turn up to trial, further referring to statements made by a friend of the alleged victim that she bore bruises and was terrified.

But the accused’s lawyer was successful in arguing that he be temporary released, stating that the defendant’s employer is to house and watch over him while on bail.

On October 28, the suspect allegedly attempted to block his wife’s nose and mouth.

Following the incident, the man was taken to the Limassol psychiatric ward for a 15-day treatment.

After he was released, police arrested him on a court order.

His trial has been set for February 1.
