A young mother was killed on Saturday night in a car accident that occurred after 10pm on the Akrotiri – Kolossi road near the village of Trachoni.

The deceased has been identified as Marileni Constantinidou, 25, from the village of Yerasa, in the Limassol district, state broadcaster CyBC reported on Sunday.

According to the CyBC, the mother was a passenger in a car driven by her 22-year-old partner and in which their three-month-old baby girl was also travelling in.

Under still unspecified circumstances, the driver lost control of the vehicle whilst negotiating a right-hand bend travelling from Akrotiri in the direction of Kolossi, and subsequently hit a tree on the left-hand side of the road, a British Bases announcement said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The infant was transported by ambulance initially to Limassol general hospital and then to Makarios hospital for observation, latest reports stated that her injuries are not life-threatening.

The driver was taken to Limassol general hospital with minor injuries and received stitches on his hands.

“Samples have been obtained for analysis, to establish if the driver was driving whilst intoxicated or not,” the British Bases announcement added.

Due to the car accident, the road was closed for many hours.

British base police are investigating the circumstances of the fatal car crash.
