North puts an end to use of plastic bags

The north is set to put an end to the use of plastic bags starting June, with an eye on banning all plastic items in the near future, it emerged on Wednesday.

According to a ‘government’ decision, plastic bags with handles will not be permitted to be given to consumers either for free or for a fee.

Light plastic bags without handles are exempt from the decision.

The move aims to stop the supply, sale, promotion or distribution of plastic bags, sold in the north for 25 kurus since 2018.

The ‘deputy prime minister’ also announced single-use plastic items such as plastic cups, plates, straws and cutlery will be banned following a decision to be taken in the next ‘cabinet’ session.
