Woman dies in Avgorou collision

A 77-year-old woman died in a collision between two vehicles in the Avgorou area of Famagusta, police said on Saturday.

The woman, Maroula Mantzalou, had been a passenger in a vehicle being driven by a 71-year-old woman.

According to police, at around 4pm on Friday, a car being driven by a 28-year-old woman on the Frenaros-Avgorou road hit the car of the 71-year-old woman who had been attempting to make a right turn from another road.

The 28-year-old had her 26-year-old sister as a passenger, while the car driven by the 71-year-old had two other passengers, the 77-year-old woman who died, and a 78-year-old woman.

Police said that from the crash both cars ended up in a nearby field, and that to remove the people from the car, the fire service had to be called.

According to authorities, everyone involved in the accident was injured, and three ambulances were called to the scene to transfer them to Famagusta General. The 26-year-old woman was later transferred to Larnaca General.

The 77-year-old woman was pronounced dead at Famagusta General.

Two of the women, 78 and 71, have fractures to their ribs and will remain in hospital, with doctors saying their condition is stable but serious.

The two younger women, 26 and 28 were not seriously injured.

Famagusta police are continuing their investigations.
