President Nikos Christodoulides, meets former President Nicos Anastasiades

President Nikos Christodoulides met with his predecessor Nicos Anastasiades at the presidential palace on Tuesday for a “friendly and creative meeting” lasting over an hour.

The two discussed the latest developments on the Cyprus problem, energy and domestic matters.

Anastasiades also made a dig over the ongoing spat between the legal service and audit office, saying first that he did not wish to comment as his new duties are to simply observe and advise where he can.

Nonetheless, despite stressing he did not want to get involved in matters he should not, Anastasiades said every individual should know the provisions of the constitution and the constitution is clear.

“I don’t think misinterpretations, superpowers and arbitrariness are allowed by anyone.”

Leaving the presidential palace after the meeting, the former president said overall, he was glad to see the policies the current government is following, as it “creates prospects that allow for the continuation of a successful governance.”

At the same time, there are new ideas “which are always welcome.”

“I would like to express my absolute satisfaction over the meeting.”

Asked if he could see any developments over Christodoulides’ idea for a more active EU role on the Cyprus problem, Anastasiades described it as a step in the right direction.

“It is something we had previously pursued and I hope it materializes.”

The former president highlighted this would benefit not only the Greek Cypriot side but also the Turish Cypriots and Turkey.
