Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou

Minister of the Interior Constantinos Ioannou will participate in the deliberations of the EU council of justice and home affairs to be held on Thursday and Friday in Luxembourg.

According to an official press release, the ministers are expected to discuss two legislations of the new pact on migration and asylum. They will express their views on the criteria and procedures for examining applications for international protection and on the solidarity framework between member states and burden sharing.

The minister is expected to emphasise the need for solidarity, especially towards the frontline states that are called upon to manage and cope with the increased immigration pressures.

The press release says that negotiations on the legislations are at an important stage, since the Swedish presidency is making efforts towards agreement on the proposals at council level, with the aim of more effective management of migration flows.

Topics on the agenda include the external dimension of migration, including the situation in Tunisia, while ministers will also discuss the current situation in Ukraine and the impact of Russia’s invasion.
