Waiters race to help the needy

The Solidarity Volunteers Club and the owners of restaurants and bars organised a fund-raising waiters’ race on Friday evening to help support 700 needy families in the Paphos district.

Waiters from various bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels in Paphos took part in the event. Holding a tray with three glasses of water on it, the waiters had to compete over a distance of 500 metres, tackling various obstacles set up by the owners of entertainment establishments en route.

The racing waiters started from the Panayia Theoskepasti Church in Kato Paphos and crossed the finish line on Ayios Antonios Street.

The idea for the charity race came from Minas Makris, who has been involved in the tourism sector for many years. He called for the race to be put on the annual agenda for Paphos as an attraction for tourists in the same way Spain has its tomato-throwing festival.
