Beach clean up planned for Saturday

CLEANING the seas will be the aim of a one-day event on Saturday being held as part of a wider EU initiative for the Mediterranean.

‘Let’s do it Mediterranean is being organised in Cyprus by The Office of the Commissioner of Environment, the Department of the Environment, the group Let’s do it Cyprus with CYMEPA are organising campaign.

The main sources of marine pollution are from illegal waste dumping near rivers and beaches by tourism and the fishing industry.

“Despite the fact that the dumping of rubbish in the Mediterranean Sea has been banned since 2009, the problem does not seem to have eased,” said an announcement from the organisers.

They said they have already mapped the beaches, and pinpointed which ones need to be cleaned. Applications are being accepted for participation by local authorities and other groups that want to participate.

The official launch will be attended by Environment Commissioner Ioanna Panayiotou on Saturday at 10am at the beach opposite the Municipal Gardens in Limassol.
