Bar review: Secret Garden Wine and Coffee Bar, Larnaca

By Andreas Vou

Directly opposite the historic St Lazarus Church in Larnaca is a new bar: The Secret Garden Wine and Coffee Bar, though its rising popularity means that it will not remain unknown for long.

Due to the success of small cafés in the last couple of years as opposed to chain establishments, a number of little such bars have cropped up around Larnaca and The Secret Garden certainly fits into that profile.

It could be tough to notice if you were merely walking in the area. From the outside, it is just a hole in the wall but a lot more meets the eye on closer inspection. With just a few simple tables and chairs laid out on the pavement, it is a great place to relax and, especially as the spring season is almost upon us, a place to take in some much needed sunshine after a chilly winter.

The bar has proven very popular with tourists and with St Lazarus church just opposite, which has always been a hugely popular tourist spot, the area is proving an ideal place for small cafés to operate.

There is a small inside seating area as well as an upstairs part which was renovated specifically for the cold wintery season with a fireplace and soft couches which makes for a very pleasant atmosphere. However, the main feature is certainly the outdoor area – the secret garden.

A small gravel walkway leads to the outside garden which is hidden from the busy streets outside and is a great quiet spot simply to unwind with your favourite beverage.

When it comes to drinks, a wide selection of wines are available both by the bottle and by the glass, as are a number of local and imported beers, though it is not a bar which focuses so much on the wide selection rather than the general atmosphere.

If you are feeling a bit peckish, there is a good selection of snacks from simple toasted sandwiches to elaborate ciabatta sandwiches and their very own Secret Garden platter which could be enough to feed a whole family.

There are also a couple of interesting events which are hosted at the bar, with live bands playing music from decades gone by on a weekly basis and the latest feature is the quiz night on Saturday nights.
