UCy, American schools develop new model in fight against cancer

Researchers from the University of Cyprus in collaboration with three American universities have developed a new mathematical model, which sheds light on the benefits of metronomic chemotherapy on different types of cancer cells.

The model was developed by assistant professor Triantafyllos Stylianopoulos together with researchers from the Massachusetts General Hospital, the Medical School University of Harvard and the University of Bangladesh, USA.

Metronomic chemotherapy, whereby lower amounts of medication are given to patients at more frequent intervals, targets the cells lining the blood vessels supplying tumour cells.

Oral chemotherapy is administered at the maximum dose which does not cause toxic problems, with a two to three-week break between treatments.

“The results of the study show that the use of this new alternative chemotherapy increases the amount of chemicals which reach the cancerous tumours, resulting in more cancer cells being killed and improved efficacy of the treatment,” the University of Cyprus said.

Studies by Stylianopoulos and his team at the University of Cyprus cancer biophysics laboratory have also shown that chemotherapy administered to breast cancer tumours in animals become more efficient when anti-fibrotic drugs are used.

“These results are of particular importance because they show that the use of commercial anti-fibrotic drugs facilitates the action of chemotherapy or nano-therapy and leads to a better therapeutic effect paving the way for their use in clinical applications”, the university’s report said.

The laboratory was founded in 2014 by Stylianopoulos with some €2m, almost exclusively from the European Research Council and the European Commission.

The objective of the laboratory is to find new strategies for dealing with cancer and metastasis, combining knowledge and techniques in engineering and biology.
