We walked into Finbarr’s, Nicosia’s Irish Bar and Restaurant, at 9pm on March 15 with the view of having a drink and listening to Cyprus’ No 1 rock band Minus One play live.
Unfortunately, we had neglected to make a reservation, but even though the place was jam packed, a waitress kindly found us two stools and a ledge to rest our drinks upon, with a direct view of the band.
With a small stage set-up in terms of space, sound system and instrumental kit, the band replaced their usual large-venue gear with a quieter set-up, and treated us all to an evening of fun and nostalgia.
It mattered not how old each patron was, there would have been something for everyone to enjoy in the two sets the band performed. Going as far back as the 1960s with Elvis Presley and The Beatles, and weaving in and out of the ensuing decades, the band left no genre untouched. Cleverly creating medleys and mash-ups, they gave us hits by The Eagles, Bon Jovi, ACDC, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, The Spice Girls and Lady Gaga, to name but a few.
Though they have just released their new album, Red Black White, which stays true to their rock roots, they only performed a couple of tracks from it, choosing instead to play covers that encouraged their audience to sing along and get up and dance, ably encouraged in that regard by their charismatic lead singer Andreas Kapatais.
A great time was had by all and I for one can’t wait to see them again at their next gig – at the Limassol Marathon after party on Sunday March 24 at 6pm at the old port square. See you there!
