Kouros was a reliable friend, Anastasiades says at funeral

Pantelis Kouros, former president Glafkos Clerides’ closest aide, who died on Saturday evening was a calm and collected man who acted as a buffer at times of crisis, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Tuesday.

Kouros, 89, was laid to rest on Tuesday following a service attended by Anastasiades and other politicians.

In his eulogy, Anastasiades highlighted Kouros’ support to Clerides and his calm and sobriety when dealing with “all of us, when, during difficult hours, we tabled views, which in your opinion would hurt the party or the president.”

Anastasiades also spoke of the initiatives Kouros used to embark on to overcome crises and eventually even assumed responsibility.

“You honoured and emphasised the importance of best friend and associate … charismatic as an associate, and reliable as a friend.”

Kouros was Clerides’ right-hand man, always by his side but rarely speaking in public or seeking publicity.

Together with Clerides, they formed the Eniaion party in 1969 and he was the former president’s advisor when he was acting president in July 1974.

With the formation of Disy in 1976, Kouros was appointed the head of Clerides’ political office.

He served as undersecretary to the president during both his terms, from 1993 to 2003.

During that time, Kouros took on a more active role in the government’s relations with the opposition, he coordinated ministers, and briefed Clerides.

“The universal respect towards your contribution is recognition of the indelible seal you left on the country with your actions,” Anastasiades said.

Kouros left behind a wife, a son and a daughter and one grandchild.
