One death from coronavirus and 100 new cases of the virus were announced on Wednesday out of 46, 925 PCR and rapid tests.

The death was of a man, aged 51, who died in Limassol general hospital. The health ministry no longer announces the vaccination history of the deceased or whether they had underlying health conditions.

There are 59 people in hospital with the virus, of whom 21 are in serious condition. The ministry said that 58.74 per cent of the patients are unvaccinated.

There were 46,925 tests carried out on Wednesday of which the vast majority were rapid tests – 42,489 – while 4,436 were PCR tests.

The PCR tests found the following positives: 14 from 201 contact tracing tests, five from 2,358 airport tests, 23 from 1,494 tests taken privately and three from 210 hospital tests.

Just over half of the rapid tests were taken privately – primarily amongst the unvaccinated who are ineligible for the government’s free screening programme – with 21,847 such tests yielding 45 positives.

The remaining 20,642 rapid tests, carried out for eligible groups via the government’s screening programme, picked up ten positives.

One person tested positive at care homes while two secondary school students tested positive after about 12,000 tests were conducted.
