Coming this week at Nicosia Pop Up Festival

With the revamped centre of Nicosia is in the Christmas spirit, the Nicosia Pop Up Festival continues to offer cultural, artistic events this month. Held either in the old town or at City Plaza, workshops and performances are taking place while shops from local creatives have been set up showcasing different projects and creations.

A total of 23 artists’ shops are open at City Plaza until the end of the month while several plays and participatory workshops are also taking place this week. Two productions are being presented in the coming days. First up is Metazonta, a performance conceptualised and researched by Giorgos Mbizios, bringing it to the OPAP Theatre stage along with Haris Iakovou, Angelos Messios and Maria Kasapi on Tuesday.

Then on Wednesday and Thursday, Irene Salata will present All Wrong Men, written and performed by herself and co-directed with Giorgos Mellehas. In between theatrical productions, presentations and music workshops are also happening. On Wednesday, between 11am and 12pm at City Plaza, Home for Cooperation is presenting its project that put Nicosia on Lonely Planet’s list of top 10 cities to visit in 2022.

Held in Greek, Home for Cooperation will talk about its United by Sound project, accompanied by Vassilis Philippou, one of the composers, lyric writers and performers of the trilingual song The Time is Ripe released under the lockdown conditions in 2020. The event is free to attend and open to all, simply bring a safe pass and register by emailing [email protected].

Two workshops by Agne Sacca are taking place on Thursday at the festival’s workshop space at City Plaza – shop number 8. Her first workshop will begin at 2.45pm, inviting adults and children over eight to play African percussions. For one hour and free of charge, Agne will introduce sounds on African drums with the class held in English, Greek and French. Then at 4pm, a Verbal Rhythms and Body Percussion workshop will follow, adding a more musical note to Thursday afternoon.
