a marble travelogue2

The 17th Lemesos International Documentary Festival kicks off on August 1 with the screening of A Marble Travelogue, directed by Sean Wang, a co-production between The Netherlands, Hong Kong, France and Greece. After the screening, the festival presents the opening event Spivak presents Santa Fe Megachurch, by Maria Spivak.

The film follows a piece of white marble stone mined in Greece which takes viewers on its Odyssey along global consumption driven by the Chinese domestic market, to investigate the role of China as the ‘world’s buyer’. This film follows marble from its homeland to the other side of the world, where it is processed for sale back to the West. As the condition of world commerce constantly shifts and changes, we encounter those whose lives are devoted to the commoditisation of things both ancient and new.

Cypriot twin sisters Marianna and Sofia Erotokritou, who also co-star in the film, will be attending the screening, which follows the documentary’s world premiere at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam (IDFA).

Following the screening, Spivak presents Santa Fe Megachurch will take place at 10.30pm presenting a vortex of compositions that will be included in the artist’s forthcoming LP, where pop sorcery emerges from strokes of electronic pulses, with the intimacy of her lyrics often reflecting a prelude to ache.
