The first Iberoamerican Film Festival nears

Spanish and Portuguese language film lovers, gather round – this festival is for you! For the very first time, the Iberoamerican Film Festival will be held in Cyprus with screenings of Iberoamerican films. Held in Nicosia for just four days in May, the festival is a collaboration between the embassies of Brazil, Cuba, Portugal and Spain as well as Instituto Cervantes de Nicosia and The Friends of the Cinema Society. Four films will offer a glimpse of Iberoamerican cinema in the capital city!

Starting off the festival, the first screening on May 4 will be City In Red by Rebeca Chávez. The Cuban film is about the rebel movement and solidarity in Santiago de Cuba during the clandestine fight against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. The screening, beginning at 8pm, will be in its original language, accompanied by either English or Greek subtitles, as all of the festival’s films will be.

Up next, on May 7, is the Brazilian film A Dog’s Will by Guel Arraes which follows two men as they find a scheme to win a girl over and face marauding bandits.

The Spanish film Mother by Rodrigo Sorogoyen about a mother who meets a teenage boy who reminds her of the son she lost ten years earlier on a beach in France will be shown on May 12.

And concluding the festival screenings will be Mother Knows by Nuno Rocha on May 14. The Portuguese production depicts a young woman who realises the impact her mother had on her life.

Best of all, all of the film screenings at the Cultural Centre of the European University have free admission. Happy viewing!
