Sixteen kilos of cannabis was found in the luggage of a man arriving at Larnaca airport, police said on Sunday.

The 28-year-old was remanded for eight days by Larnaca district court after he arrived on a flight from another European country shortly after 7pm on Saturday.

During a check at passport control, it emerged that an arrest warrant was pending against him for a drugs case, as a result of which he was arrested.

Further investigation of his luggage by customs officers revealed 15 nylon bags which contained 16.12kg of cannabis, police said.

Spokesman for the police drugs unit YKAN Stelios Sergides said the 28-year-old had arrived from Zurich via Barcelona.

The arrest follows a similar case when 19kg were found in the luggage of someone arriving at Paphos airport.
