The cabinet on Wednesday approved the introduction of a free health certificate for students participating in sport competitions and athletic events. This measure, deemed essential for their participation, will be implemented in 2024.

The announcement was made by Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, who underlined that the measure “resolves a long-standing issue concerning the safety and health of children”.

“From now on, no primary or secondary education student will be allowed to participate in school athletic events without a health certificate,” she said.

The minister further explained that participating children will need to renew their health cards once every three years, “thus ensuring that they face absolutely no risks while taking part in sports competitions”.

“I want to encourage all teachers and educators who believe their students are capable and willing to participate in such activities to ensure their possession of the health certificate,” she said, adding that until now few children participated.

Michaelidou added that the students’ parents will still be allowed to take their children to their own personal doctors.

“However, certain examinations and checks necessary in order to take part in sport competitions should be carried out by specialised professionals, such as the ones who will approve the issuance of the health certificate for students,” she added.

“The introduction of the latter aims to prioritise the well-being and safety of young participants, ensuring that they can engage in sport activities with peace of mind.”
