Police road checks reveal violations in commercial vehicles

In a week-long initiative spanning from November 6 to 11, the police carried out checks on a total of 225 vehicles, comprising 192 trucks and 33 buses. The campaign aimed to scrutinise vehicle compliance, resulting in the identification of 82 violations among the trucks.

According to a police statement, no violations were reported among bus drivers during the checks.

However, among the 82 violations found in truck drivers, 26 were related to the improper condition of truck tires, seven violations were linked to tachograph usage, and five violations were associated with driver documents.

The road checks were part of a series of actions aimed at reducing road collisions and enhancing safety across the road network. Within the weekly initiative, truck and bus drivers received information on the risks associated with non-compliance with existing legislation.

Technical and mechanical suitability of trucks and buses, validity of driver and vehicle documents, speed limiting devices and tachographs, as well as compliance with driving and working hours among professional drivers, were focal points of the traffic checks.

“Identified violations, such as exceeding speed limits and using mobile phones while driving, are proven key factors contributing to severe and fatal road collisions,” the police statement said.

The nationwide road checks were conducted in concomitance with other European countries, as part of the Cyprus police collaboration with the European Traffic Police Network Roadpol.
