Police warn of WhatsApp scams impersonating officers

whatsapp

Police cautioned the public on Thursday to be wary of scams on WhatsApp, where individuals posing as police officers have been trying to extort bank and ID details from unsuspecting victims.

According to police, hooded individuals are video-calling people and pretending to be members of the police and asking for their ID and banking information.

Police said that the calls are being conducted in English and warned that that they are part of a scam and do not originate from law enforcement.

People are advised to not answer such calls, and if they do to not give out any personal information. Police further cautioned against clicking on any links sent from unknown numbers.

Also, the police said that if anyone has shared sensitive information to the scammers, to contact their bank immediately to prevent unauthorised use of their information.
