One woman Andrew Lloyd Webber musical in Paphos

Theatre productions are slowly picking up as local theatre companies present their 2024 agenda. Most are in Greek, some are in Russian, others are for children and occasionally, a few in English appear.

But, Paphos lovers of theatre and musicals will get to enjoy one of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s creations this month as the Stage One Theatre Group in Emba presents a new show. An adaptation of Tell Me On a Sunday will be presented on January 27, and it is in English.

The musical is a one-woman show, with actress Marti Webb being the best known in the role, which she was the first to bring to life. Many more actresses have taken on the role since the musical was first performed in 1977, from Bernadette Peters and Patsy Palmer to Jodie Prenger.

This upcoming Paphos production takes inspiration from the Gielgud Theatre’s 2003 version which starred Denise Van Outen. At the Emba theatre, Jezebel Groove will take on the role of ‘the girl’, following her role as Cinderella in last month’s production.

The musical follows the journey of a young British woman who moves to New York City in search of love. The show is known for its intimate and emotional storytelling, as the protagonist shares her experiences, hopes and disappointments through a series of letters, now updated to emails, WhatsApp and other modern communications, with her mother and her friends back home.

The music is composed by Lloyd Webber with the lyrics of Don Black capturing the emotions of the central character.

“One of the strengths of Tell Me on a Sunday,” say Paphos organisers, “lies in its simplicity and its ability to connect with the audience on a personal level. The solo format allows for a deep exploration of the character’s inner thoughts and feelings.

“It’s a poignant exploration of love, ambition and self-discovery, showcasing Andrew Lloyd Webber’s ability to create memorable tunes that enhance the emotional impact of the story.

“While Tell Me on a Sunday,” they conclude, “may not be as grand or elaborate as some of Lloyd Webber’s other works, its simplicity and focus on character make it a compelling and relatable musical experience. If you appreciate heartfelt storytelling and beautiful melodies, this show is certainly worth exploring.”
