A boat carrying 26 migrants from Syria was towed to safety amid rough seas in the Famagusta district on Tuesday.

Police said the boat was drifting out of control in rough seas 16 nautical miles north east of Cape Greco at around 3.40pm when a patrol boat was dispatched to the area.

The boat reached the migrants and towed their vessel to the Golden Coast fishing refuge in Paralimni.

The passengers will be tested for the coronavirus before they are transferred to a reception centre inland, police said.
